AUG. 11, 2020 | 6 A.M. | PORT ST. LUCIE–The Port St. Lucie City Council unanimously approved a resolution Aug. 10 for the installation of “Veranda Sails”, a $500,000 sculpture made of mirror-polished stainless steel, in the traffic roundabout on Becker Road in the Veranda development.
The 32-foot tall sculpture was created by British artist, David Harber, and is currently being produced in England. Greenpointe Communities, the developer of Veranda, plans to complete the installation this fall.
The sculpture will be at the large roundabout currently under construction at the intersection of Southeast Becker Road and Southeast Veranda Gardens Boulevard and Southeast Veranda Preserves Boulevard.
This will be the third sculpture by Harber on display in the city – he also created “Dark Planet” and “Mantle,” which are on Gatlin Boulevard.
The $500,000 cost includes $250,000 for the sculpture, $200,000 for the pedestal and base, and $50,000 for lighting and other construction costs.
Developers furnish or pay for public art as part of their development agreement. The sculpture was purchased by the developer.
