Suspect fatally shot by deputy in Fort Pierce

DEC. 1, 2019 | 8:00 A.M. | FORT PIERCE–An attempted burglary suspect was fatally shot during a confrontation with a deputy overnight in Fort Pierce.

According to St. Lucie County Sheriff officials, deputies responded to an attempted burglary call on Promenade Way in Fort Pierce at approximately 3:35 a.m. today.

The caller told the 911 dispatcher that two males in dark clothing wearing hoodies were trying to break into parked vehicles in the driveway.

When two deputies arrived they saw a  vehicle leaving the area and attempted a traffic stop at 3:46 a.m., according to the sheriff’s report.

The driver did not stop and fled from the deputies crashing at 25th Street and Edwards Road,” the report stated. When the deputies approached the vehicle, the driver took off by hitting the gas. In doing so a deputy’s foot was run over.

The deputies followed the vehicle until it crashed again at approximately 3:51 a.m. near the intersection of 8th Street and Boston Avenue.

“The driver and passenger fled the vehicle on foot with both deputies following,” the report said. “One deputy located the driver in the 900 block of Boston Avenue where he resisted arrest then pulling a firearm on the deputy. ”

A  deputy fired with his weapon, striking the suspect.

The deputies gave aid while waiting for Fire Rescue personnel. However, the suspect was pronounced dead by Fire Rescue.

Deputies described the suspect as a Hispanic male, approximately 20 years  old

The second suspect has not been found.

Both deputies have been placed on administrative leave with pay. The incident is still under investigation.
